Gear Wrenches Are Loved By Most Mechanics
Good mechanics make good use of gear wrenches and that's a fact. These versatile tools are actually fairly simple to put into use and give a mechanic flexibility in loosening or tightening bolts and other objects. Always make sure to find one that's made of a good quality of metal, though, because cheap metal wrenches don't last long. Keep a set of these in the toolbox, even if one is a casual mechanic.
One reason these kinds of wrenches are so valued is that they're designed to be able to fit into many a tight spot, especially spots where standard wrenches just don't make much sense to use. These ratcheting and reverse-ratcheting wrenches (as they're sometimes called) are able to tighten or loosen bolts in a way that is truly impressive.
Wrenches such as these can slip over a bolt and then tighten or loosen through a ratcheting mechanism that enables a mechanic to avoid lifting the wrench up and off the bolt over and over again. Just fit the proper-size wrench head over the bolt and begin ratcheting or turning it. Many come with the ability to reverse-ratchet or go in the opposite direction with just a flick of a lever or switch, too.
Given how common many vehicles and motorcycles are in terms of their metric sizes when it has to do with bolts and screws, it's always recommended that anybody looking to fix or repair anything have at least several metric wrenches and several standard wrenches. A good 12 piece metric set usually runs somewhere around $140 or so. This is a very good price for such a versatile set of wrenches, by the way.
In terms of all of their types and varieties, there are at least several different kinds that can be had. Look at what the scope and complexity of the job will be before deciding just how many wrenches and wrench types will be needed. Many professional or serious amateur mechanics will have a number of different kinds, including locking flex head ratcheting sets and an S-reversible set or two.
In general, many mechanics try to have a reversible set, a locking flex head set and a straight set in common sizes. With all of these kinds of wrenches available, it'll be a very short amount of time before anything assembled with bolts will be able to be disassembled and reassembled in no time at all. Just make sure the set is of good quality and can be ratcheted using only about five degrees of movement.
Gear wrenches come in a wide variety of lengths, sizes and are made of a variety of metals. Going with a good set of decent quality, rather than buying a cheap set at a discount auto parts store that's usually made of cheap pot metal, will save a lot of aggravation both in the short and the long term. Remember, it's a poor mechanic who blames his tools for his shortcomings, so don't buy cheap tools.
